We have already mentioned several times in the course of this reasearch many large and small towns on the Island: the time has come to make a geographical summary 😊

If you have followed us in the previous episodes it will not surprise you to know that almost every corner of Sardinia has developed a particular form of weaving with materials, designs and other characteristics that make it unique. We have also noticed this from the variety of terminologies that we have reported to you . And it is precisely to preserve this art and the numerous other handicraft activities in the area (silver, ceramic, copper, basketry, cutlery) that, thanks to the contributions of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the European Community, have arisen the ISOLA pilot centers throughout the territory (Sardinian Institute of Artisan Labor Organization). In these spaces training courses are organized, creative production workshops and exhibition halls are made available for the sale of products.

But let’s go back to our geographical summary. We recommend you to write down the areas mentioned for a next holiday on the Island.

PROVINCE OF SASSARI

We are located in north-western Sardinia and the centers of OSILO, VILLANOVA MONTELEONE, ITTIRI, BONORVA and PLOAGHE have an important textile tradition. Precisely to preserve it in the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century, these municipalities were chosen to start a campaign to support craftsmanship. Even today, albeit with considerable difficulties, we try to preserve it. Added to these is AGGIUS, undoubtedly the most representative municipality of Gallura textile craftsmanship, strong in an ancient tradition, attested since prehistoric times by the discovery of a large amount of spindles, spindles and loom weights. Even in the first half of the nineteenth century, it is said that every family in Aggius owned at least one loom.

PROVINCE OF ORISTANO

We are now moving to the province of Oristano, pointing out the centers of MORGONGIORI and MOGORO, not far from each other. Here, too, with the passage of time, the weaving has been gradually abandoned or has changed according to new taste and market needs. Given the particularity of the textile products that were produced, the two municipalities were the main centers of two field surveys carried out by some researchers between 1984 and 1986 and recently updated. Still in the same province, the role played by the municipality of BUSACHI is also important. Here they produced linen cloths, grown locally, in fact it is very easy to find traditional tools for its processing in the country.

Between the provinces of Sassari and Oristano, the municipalities of NULE (SS) and SAMUGHEO (OR) deserve a separate mention. In the first, a particular production of carpets has developed which represents, in traditional Sardinian craftsmanship, an “out of the box” voice. It is precisely in Nule that historically the use of bright colors that are imposed on the typical and sober black and white striped fabrics is attested for the first time.

The extent of this innovation was such that a legend spread in the popular imagination. The Moor Bolìn, proposing to his beloved Milena to marry him while weaving a black and white blanket, promised to reveal her the secret to extracting colors from plants and herbs. Nule carpets are therefore considered, at a legendary level, as the fruit of the union between a gesture of external love and popular ability. The only way to obtain such an innovative and original result.

Samugheo is defined as the “textile town”. For decades, weaving has been the leading sector of the local economy. In Samugheo they produced from blankets to saddlebags, from tablecloths to sheets, from towels to curtains, from bedroom sets to lamps, from tapestries to carpets, from centerpieces to tapestries. It is no coincidence that the Murats, the Unique Regional Museum of Sardinian Textile Art, was built in Samugheo. Production, albeit to a lesser extent, is still proceeding so much that the Region of Sardinia has given the area the recognition of the Textile District. There are more than 20 industrial laboratories in the area, with over 160 employees. In addition, the consortium of a group of companies in the sector has achieved the important goal of obtaining a sort of DOC (controlled designation of origin) mark for textile products.
