Sardinia: a travel destination for extraordinary summer holidays, but not only.

It is a land rich in history and poetry: a single detailed study is not enough to describe it. Those who admire its traditions could be deceived by the idea of a unique panorama. Instead there are many habits to investigate.

Many traditions need to be rediscovered, valued and above all brought to the attention of the public.

In particular, as regards its typical costumes, we note how each is characterized by a thousand characteristics that refer to certain territories even to single inhabited centers, arriving at a capillary division. Very often travelers who have visited the island over the centuries constitute an interesting source for analyzing popular culture and traditional dresses.

Art Nomade Milan News will focus on this theme in its in-depth analysis of December 2021 and January 2022.

In Sardinia there is a richer panorama than one might suppose and its roots are extremely interesting and archaic, connecting to the history of the Mediterranean Sea revisited thanks to the island interpretation.

Weaving is intimately linked to the daily practices of the past, to ceremonies, rites, but also to myths and divinities, fairy tales and legends. Just think about the story of Penelope in the Odyssey or the myth of Ariadne’s thread.

Thus, we start from hand weaving, for domestic use, up to the industrial revolution that brought with it new synthetic yarns, chemical dyes and machinery, sweeping away some ancient methods. Fortunately, in recent years, attempts have been made to go back to the past, for example by recovering the processing of hemp and linen. Now the artisanal productions are enhanced, having the possibility of transforming themselves into luxury and niche creations.

Before starting this virtual journey between threads and fabrics, it is important to state the meaning of some words.

They will be your compass during this adventure.

WEFT: the thread that forms the transverse part of the fabric.

WARP: the set of threads that make up the longitudinal part of the fabric and between which the weft is inserted to form the weave itself.

FRAME: the part of a weaving loom that is used to move the warp threads. Even to perform a simple job, such as canvas, the frames must be at least two.
